2001 South West - Birdseye Maple into Macassar Ebony (6-Pointer)
If you know South West cues, you’ll know ebony builds have always been among the most desirable. They’re known for a firm, powerful, no-nonsense hit, the kind of feedback appreciated by Taiwanese greats like Yang Ching-Shun, Wu Chia-Ching, and the Ko brothers.
This particular cue was built in 2001 and features the engraved cactus logo, year built and numbered pin.
Most ebony South West cues are built at 20oz and above. This one, however, sits on the lighter side — a rare combination for players who want that classic ebony hit but lighter butt weight.
There’s always discussion around Gabon vs. Macassar ebony. While Gabon is often marketed as the more “high-end” option, South West prices both Gabon and Macassar equally as premium selections.
Many experienced SW players will tell you Macassar offers slightly more feedback in the grip hand, while Gabon can feel extremely stiff & crispy — sometimes too rigid for certain preferences. That’s also why some players gravitate toward maple, pau ferro, or alves nose woods for added feel and response.
Best of all, the original shaft (Shaft 01) comes fitted with the older Aegis ferrule material — now discontinued and no longer in production.
While it is known to show chalk staining more easily, many players still regard it as the better-playing version compared to today’s Aegis II, offering a slightly softer, more responsive feel rather than the cleaner but stiffer hit of the newer material.
A strong-playing ebony South West from a desirable era, with the kind of details experienced players truly appreciate.
