2010 South West - Purple Heart into Gaboon Ebony (6-Pointer)
Ebony builds hold a special place among South West enthusiasts — prized for a dense, authoritative hit that's direct, solid, and unapologetically firm.
It's a response serious players gravitate toward, including Taiwanese legends like Yang Ching-Shun, Wu Chia-Ching, and the Ko brothers.
This cue dates to 2010, carrying the engraved cactus logo, build year, and numbered pin — hallmarks of an authentic South West from a highly regarded era.
Ebony South West cues typically run 20oz or heavier. This one is notably lighter — delivering that unmistakable ebony punch and stiffness without the added butt weight. A rare and appealing balance.
For nosewood, Gaboon ebony has long been the top choice for players chasing maximum power.
Crisp and ultra-stiff, it transfers energy cleanly, making it effortless to stun or move the cue ball. The hit is sharp, focused, and commanding.
Both original shafts carry the earlier Aegis ferrule — now discontinued and increasingly hard to find.
It picks up chalk marks more easily, but many seasoned players prefer its slightly softer, more responsive character over the cleaner, firmer feel of Aegis II.
A 2010 ebony South West that plays every bit as strong as its reputation — built in an era collectors respect, configured the way experienced players value most.
- Overall Straightness: 95% Straight
Butt: 90%
Shaft 1: 90%
Shaft 2: 100%
Shaft 3: 95%
Shaft 4: 98%
Shaft 5: 99%
This was my personal playing cue for a long time.
At one point I had 13 shafts with matching ringwork, but ended up keeping just these 5.
Two shafts are original to the cue, and a third was later ordered from South West to match the originals.
The fourth and fifth shafts originally had different ringwork — they played so nicely that I sent them back to South West to have the ringwork replaced to match the set (you can see my surname written in pencil on the shaft collar face by South West).
Shafts 1, 2, and 4 carry the earlier, now-discontinued South West Aegis ferrule.
Shaft 3 originally came with Aegis II (the newer LBM) when ordered, but I had our local cuemaker replace it with the same Aegis material to match the rest. Shaft 5 was fitted with a special piece of Curly Micarta.
This cue weighs heavy but plays light and well-balanced — one of the best-playing ebony South Wests I've owned.
The reason for selling is simply that I've come to prefer maple-nose cues these days, and this cue just sits in my dry cabinet.
I won most of my local tournaments with this cue, and you can see the patina from years of chalk and play (this can be cleaned upon buyer's request).
Alton also made a matching set of 1B2S crown fancy joint protectors for this cue with my name engraved on them — these will not be included in the sale.
The cue originally came with plain (non-scrimshaw) 1B2S caps, which I later had added a few more sets with scrimshaw versions.
The cue is in all-original finish — both the butt and all shafts have never been refinished, and it's been well cared for throughout.
The wrap was replaced with South West's white linen wrap with double black specs.
One shaft-side joint protector has a scratch, and there are some scuff marks on the buttcap and joint area.
